Chau-Ram County Park is a relatively small recreational park in upstate South Carolina, off of Hwy. 76, between Westminster, SC and Clayton, GA. The name comes from the Chauga River, that flows through the park, and Ramsey Creek, which provides a nice little waterfall. The Chauga River has some beach areas for picnics and swimming, and across the bridge from the park entrance, there is a network of hiking trails on the western side of the river.
Just across Ramsey Creek from the visitor's center, a trail leads up to where Ramsey Creek flows by before heading over the falls. The creek rushes by on its way over the edge. Across the bridge over the Chauga River, I started on one of the trails in the network. I started on the Upper Trail, which goes by a swiftly flowing part of the Chauga River. The rapids along the Upper Trail flowed through many different channels between the rocks. Eventually, I connected up to the Lower Loop Trail, which passes by some calmer areas of the Chauga River. As the trail returns to the suspension bridge where one crosses to the hiking area, the rapids start to kick in again. Many places just off the trail offer places to wade by the riverside. As I left the park, I decided to stop for a picture of Ramsey Creek Falls, and was treated to a small rainbow.
