These images are from the Loyston Loop Trail in Loyston Point, which is north of Knoxville. Loyston Point is a peninsula on the Clinch River, and is about 30 miles north of the city proper. According to the maps, this trail is 5.4 miles in length.
This is pretty much the standard view along most of this trail, taken in the winter of 2016. The trail winds around a ridge of a hill rising in the northwest part of the peninsula. Because the trees were still dormant, my pictures focused mostly on interesting patterns in the trees. The bark of this tree resembles overlapping scales. Mushrooms creating steps around the bole of an old tree. I found something ghostly about this tree trunk, spiraling up through the bleak landscape. Another ghost tree, screaming. The old exposed roots spread their tendrils across the barren ground. A fantastic landscape in miniature across an old stump. Here's a view of Clinch River from a point on the peninsula.
