The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia was looking to redesign its site when I joined the team in 2009. This site is the result of months of planning by a committee that I helped direct. The designs were created by me, as were almost all of the slides representing the departments, centers, institutes, and programs.
In order to create the slideshow and make it as accessible and usable as possible, I extended the jQuery cycle plugin, allowing it to using background images that replaced the actual text in the slides. For users with a screen reader, the slides have actual text that can be read by the software, while visual users see the graphics and fonts in the slides. The slides are also designed to load dynamically, so that the user only needs to load three for the page to be loaded, and the other 40 or so are loaded as they become available. Thus, we can have a large, randomly ordered slideshow without taking undue time to load.
Originally, this site had a custom-built news system that maintained the articles on the front page and in the news area. This was before Drupal became the norm among Franklin websites. This news system has since been co-opted by the Franklin Chronicles, a Drupal-powered blog site created by our team.
Although this site is neither powered by a CMS, nor is it responsive, the next generation of this site is in the works and will use the Drupal framework and be responsive for multiple devices.
